MALAYSIA Durian is the new gold
Malaysian durian imports have risen in the weeks leading up to Lunar New Year. With prices around RM85/KG (RMB135), Malaysia produces around 300,000 tons of durian annually.
But due to bad weather and the pandemic, durian production has dropped significantly compared to previous years. This is the main factor in the raise of durian prices which can increase by 30% to 40% percent.
Due to the pandemic, durian sellers have moved to online platforms in order to sell their products. This opens up a previously untapped market for durian.
Starting from August 2019, Malaysia will have permission to ship frozen whole durians overseas whereas previously they could only ship processed durian.
During peak season, Malaysia will be able to export 1000 tons of durian to china which would be worth over 80 billion RMB.
